Description

Super-Kamiokande (Super-K) and Hyper-Kamiokande (Hyper-K) are large water Cherenkov detectors to observe Cherenkov rings by large aperture photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). The reconstruction performance can be degraded by a noise from a thermal electron, radioactive contaminations and off-timing pulses. Therefore, it is important to understand the noise characteristics for high precision measurements in the future.
Hyper-K PMT was newly developed for Hyper-Kamiokande. Over 130 Hyper-K PMTs were installed in Super-K. Different characteristics between the Hyper-K PMTs and Super-K PMTs can be evaluated in the Super-K detector. To maximize a noise rejection performance for neutron tagging, I investigated and modeled the glass scintillation noise and off -timing pulses of the two PMT types.
In this poster, I report the noise characteristics of the two PMT types. Furthermore, I explain the improve PMT noise modeling in a water Cherenkov detector based on my studies.
